Introduction to the Role of Donkeys and Mules in One Health

Overview

The concept of One Health refers to the interdependence of human, animal and environmental health. Donkeys and mules play a pivotal role around the globe in supporting human health and wellbeing. This course introduces the concepts of One Health and One Welfare and explores the role of donkeys and mules within these contexts, using examples from around the globe. Relationships between human and donkey health and welfare and sustainable solutions for reducing the environmental impact from domesticated donkey keeping are explored.

 

Aims:

  • To gain a solid understanding of One Health and One Welfare
  • To understand the role of the donkeys and mules within the context of One Health, with an awareness of the interlinked nature of human handler, donkey and environmental health

 

Course Content

Module 1: What is One Health and One Welfare?

Module 2: Exploring the relationships between human and donkey/mule health and wellbeing

Module 3: Protecting the environment for equids, humans and wildlife

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course the learner will be expected to be able to:

1. Define One Health and be able to list examples from around the globe,

2. Summarise One Welfare and understand the relationship with One Health,

3. Recognise and understand the role of donkeys and mules in One Health,

4. Describe potential welfare concerns and conflicts that may arise through keeping donkeys and mules for human enterprise,

5. Recognise the environmental impact of keeping donkeys and mules. Explain common examples of methods taken to reduce or limit negative environmental impact.

Proficient in understanding written and spoken English
